ABSA ATM Dispensed Counterfeit notes
My grandfather used an ABSA ATM to withdraw his SASSA pension grant and unfortunately R1300, which is over 65% of his total grant came out as counterfeit notes. He went into the branch with the notes and SASSA statement, but they told him that they can't assist him. I am shattered, as this is his sole income and he went to the ATM trusting that one of the big 5 banks in South Africa will serve his needs, but he is left with worthless notes and struggling to make ends meet.

29 Jan 2026, 15:56Dear Zola, Thank you so much for the reply. I noticed that you highlighted three amounts on different dates. Did the ATM dispense **** notes for all the amounts highlighted? Please confirm the ATM number and send us the ATM slips for the respective dates. Additionally, we would require more information as to when your grandfather realised that the notes he received were ****. For example, if he received the notes on 07/01/2026, when did he realise that the notes were **** and how? where not all notes were ****, please provide more information, including the date of the withdrawal and the amount, how much was ****, and what the **** denominations were (for example, R200 x2; R50 x3 ect). On which dates were the **** notes reported to Absa? Please note that our ATMs are highly regulated and electronically monitored, and any **** note will immediately show on the ATM audit and will be rejected by the system and the machine. We take this matter seriously and request that you provide more information about the notes in question. The highlighted amounts are not sufficient for the investigation team to conduct an audit, and we kindly request that you adhere to the above request when replying to this email. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
