Absa - a bank strictly for masochists
Absa has just blocked my credit card because of FICA requirements, they say. This should not be a difficult matter to sort out, but unfortunately Absa delights in making your life a misery and impeding service from their side. They give me two options to rectify this matter - use their electronic channels or visit a branch. I have done both, with no resolution. Firstly, I provided them with the required documentation on 25 March already and thought that would be the end of the matter. Apparently not, as they seem to have just ignored the documentation. Then, without prior notification, I was left stranded in a busy supermarket queue with no cash or credit card causing major embarrassment. I then visited the local branch, who confirmed that the documentation was received by the bank, but they could not help me, because I am a Private Bank client. They sent an email to the Private Bank, who, a day later, confirmed that this email was received but it would take some time to investigate this matter and to resolve it. My guess is it could take at least a week, probably longer. You see, I have lots of experience with Absa Private Bank sorting out queries. I financed a car through them and a few years after I have paid it off completely, wanted to trade the car in for the purchase of a new car, only to find that I could not trade it in as I was not the registered owner according to officail records. After the debt to Absa was paid off, they did not notify the authorities that they no longer had any rights to the vehicle , which should in the normal course of business be done automatically. It took two and a half weeks to finally get the necessary documentation from them, because the account manager at Absa Private Bank assigned to my account deemed it beyond him to deal with such a matter. Needless to say, I did not avail myself of Absa finance for this purchase of a new vehicle or for any vehicle purchase since. My house was mortgaged to Absa and insured by Absa Finance. When I sold the house, I informed them of the sale and the fact that I won't need any insurance beyond the date of registration. Of course, they happily went on deducting premiums, claiming that I should have informed them timeously. I of course did and sent them a copy of the email, which finally ended up resolving this matter with great difficulty some ten days after I provided them with the proof. Needless to say, I have not and will never again avail myself of Absa's mortgage financing. Now it is my credit card's turn, the very last account I still have with Absa. Will they be able to fix this? Will they sincerely apologise? I do not hold my breath on either of these.
