85 year old man conned at ATM
On the 13th of November my father visited the Sunward Park ABSA ATM to withdraw money. He inserted his card and soon realised that on the screen , the language was a a foreign language he could not understand. He tried to cancel the transaction pressing the cancel button. Nothing happened and the machine did not give the card.He tried for some time to get the card out when a lady working at Clicks saw him struggle. She tried to help but could not retrieve the card. She told my dad to go with her to Clicks where they called the Absa cancellation department and stopped the card.
When my dad went to the bank to enquire about the card, He drew a statement and saw that R1000 was drawn out of his account. He immediately reported it and the branch opened an investigation. The following day he went back and drew another statement and saw that the same card was used at Liquor City and another R916 were withdrawn. This was done after the card were stopped. Another enquiry was opened regarding this transaction. After many follow ups to the branch, he has now heard that they are not willing to refund him any money.
I really think that Absa could have done more to investigate this matter .
