AARTO and the Gauteng Roads Department should be held accountable for what seems to be a negligent and profit-driven approach to enforcement.

We would like to bring to your attention the type of fines issued by AARTO that cause unnecessary confusion and stress for motorists.

In July 2023, I submitted a formal complaint to both AARTO and the City of Tshwane regarding confusing road signage at the Diepsloot off-ramp. The issue involved motorists, including locals, being fined for “failing to stop at a stop sign.” However, the slipway onto the N14 from the R55 is controlled by a traffic signal—not a stop sign.

Following my complaint, the City of Tshwane recommended that the Gauteng Roads Department investigate the matter and install a flashing signal ("flicker face") for the left turn onto the N14. As a result, AARTO cancelled my fine.

Now, in April 2025—more than a year and a half later—the recommended change has still not been implemented. Despite this, AARTO continues to issue fines at this intersection, showing little regard for logical road safety improvements and instead prioritizing revenue generation. This ongoing situation continues to cause unnecessary confusion and stress for motorists.

Shouldn’t governing bodies like AARTO and the Gauteng Roads Department be held to a higher standard—one of integrity, accountability, and a genuine commitment to public safety?
