Exploitation at its finest

A few weeks ago, my mom got an email from PayFast regarding an "inactivity fee" of R115 that will be charged as of 31 Jan 2021.

My mom is elderly and technologically challenged, so this was highly distressing to her. When I tried to log in to the PayFast website on her behalf, her email address was apparently not registered. This created greater confusion. I contacted PayFast to clarify since their website and social media pages had nothing explaining further.

I got a response saying that mom had a positive balance of R6.00 from a Takealot purchase she had made. This was never communicated with her and her Takealot account mentions no credits.

I then decided to register her email address and go through the whole rigmarole, because I'll be damned if this exploitative company gets a single cent from her, and I am greeted by "invalid username/password". I had JUST registered and knew I could not have forgotten any details, so I repeated the log in with the same result.

My problem is: my mom did not have a registered account with PayFast, yet somehow got this really scary email from them. She apparently has a credit she has no idea about. And there is no way to access her newly registered account. Sure, because her balance is less than R10, she won't be charged, but that means this entirely unhelpful and not-at-all-transparent (and therefore *****) site will get that money. How many other people are they going to **** this way?
