Debit on a cancelled account

On the 13 of March 2015 i called in to cancel with 1 life, the agent advised that i send an email to cancel. I did as advised but on the 24 money was taken out of my account. I thought in insurance that we pay upfront, so why did 1life take money from my bank account when i have cancelled with them?
