Account was closed, still getting charged fees

I closed my current account around October 2011.

I went into the branch, paid what was due and handed over my cards to the teller who destroyed them.

I assumed that was is. Now all of the sudden i owe R600 because of monthly service fees.

I know have to constantly follow-up and still do not have an answer as to whether or not the account is closed.

I will not be held liable for the fees charged as the account has been dormant since closure.
This is not the first time this has happened as close family members have experienced exactly the same problem.
