| HEADLINE | Refuused Cover Because of My Status |
||
| I have been on my previous medical aid since 2008 and they are aware that i am hiv positive and am taking medication for it. ( viral load unditactable ). However, beacuse of the fact that i can not afford the installments, i started looking for alternative meadical aid, i for Essential med and called in first before doing the on line application to confirm if they cover hiv positive people, the answer was yes , they will just impose a waiting period for hospitalisation but will cover my medication from time premiums are paid.i then submitted my application online for their top of the range cover, ( stated fully that i am HIV positive ), two day later i received an sms saying that application declined and i must call the sharecall number where Nicoline told me the reason for them declining was BECAUSE I AM HIV POSITIVE. Is this not discrimination at its best. Especially seeing that i had called in prior to find out if i can be covered and they said yes. It is already a problem getting life cover now we have to endure this when looking for medical aid as well | |||

Hello tawona, Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused as a result of this unfortunate misunderstanding. Our call centre operator was correct in confirming that HIV is covered and that there are waiting periods for our Hospital Plan. However, HIV is only covered for clients contracting the illness after the initial waiting period (which is, in our case, 90 days) and as a result of accidental exposure - it is not covered as a pre-existing condition. It is our policy to be entirely clear on this and our website refers to our HIV/Aids benefit under our Hospital Plan policy information. We regret that we are not able to assist you. Kind regards Lee Rodgers Chief Operating Officer |
