I have 2 ABSA accounts which have been dormant for many years; one is a current account and the other a credit card. The only movement on the current account was medical payments and the service fee about R192 p/mth. I've since moved the medical aid payments to a different bank so there is no need to keep the accounts and the service fee is a waste of money. I've tried in vain to close these accounts despite having a signed confirmation letter and my ID. I've been to ABSA Eastgate several times to try close these accounts, but have given up after queuing for ages. I then tried to close the accounts at ABSA Bedford Centre as its quieter there, but the first time all their "systems" were offline for most of the day (earlier this week), and the today I was told that I need to hand in the debit and credit card, and cheque book, and provide proof of residence before this can be done; failing which I have to go to a police station and get an affidavit stating that I no longer have these cards. I haven't had cards or cheque book for these accounts for many years. This is shocking service IMO and just a low blow to prevent me from closing these accounts. |

I was contacted by the ABSA Bedfordview branch shortly after I lodged this complaint, and the matter was dealt with in a better way thereafter. Most of the issues have now been resolved, I'm just awaiting the time period lapse on the 32 day notice account, then everything will be finalised. ABSA just need to take note of the issues raised for future sake : 1. Queues at Eastgate branch are unacceptable 2. Manner in which long standing clients are dealt with is hugely important |
